Parents’ Summer Survival Guide, by Dr. Brad SchwallDr. Brad Schwall

In the summer, find a balance of unstructured play-time, routine, enrichment, and quality family time.  Children need unstructured time to rest and be creative, but providing structure, experiences, and tools that put the mind and body to work help children have fun and grow.

Have a Routine

  • Stick to a bedtime routine as much as possible
  • Plan meals and have healthy snacks on hand to avoid impulsive, unhealthy eating
  • Establish rules for sibling disagreements and other situations that can lead to problems

Spend Quality Family Time Together

  • Read together
  • Talk
  • Plan a variety of activities together

Exercise the Mind

  • Have fun, interesting, and educational magazines available
  • Help find safe, informative, and interactive web sites to explore
  • Stock up on good books from the library
  • Have games, puzzles, and art supplies on hand
  • Allow for unstructured play-time

Exercise the Body

  • Go swimming
  • Ride bikes
  • Go on walks
  • Do activities that involve physical activity
