Know the risk factors that lead to substance abuse and reduce those risks with proactive strategies now.
Risk Factor: family history of substance abuse

- If you have a family history of substance abuse, as your children get older, educate them about your family history and how to avoid abusing substances.
- Model healthy choices.
Risk Factor: lack of social and emotional skills

- Build your child’s skills for handling feelings, being confident, solving problems, and handling peer pressure.
- When children develop skills for making responsible decisions and dealing with stress, they can handle life and relationships successfully as they enter adolescence and adulthood.
- Healthy behaviors prevent and replace unhealthy behaviors.
