Know the risk factors that lead to substance abuse and reduce those risks with proactive strategies now.

Risk Factor: family history of substance abuse

Risk Reducers

  • If you have a family history of substance abuse, as your children get older, educate them about your family history and how to avoid abusing substances.
  • Model healthy choices.

Risk Factor: lack of social and emotional skills

Risk Reducers

  • Build your child’s skills for handling feelings, being confident, solving problems, and handling peer pressure.  
  • When children develop skills for making responsible decisions and dealing with stress, they can handle life and relationships successfully as they enter adolescence and adulthood.
  • Healthy behaviors prevent and replace unhealthy behaviors.

Risk Factor: peers who abuse substances

Risk Reducers

  • Develop a strong bond with your child at an early age and develop a strong focus against substance abuse at home to counteract the influence of peers.
  • Help your child choose friends who are positive influences and find positive, safe, and legal ways to socialize and have fun.

Risk Factor: lack of parental supervision

Risk Reducers

  • Use teachable moments to talk about substance abuse.  
  • Speak honestly about the effects of substances.  
  • Speak directly about the dangers of abuse.  
  • Establish clear limits.
  • Be consistent in guiding the behavior of your children from an early age and continue to be consistent when establishing expectations on behavior as they enter situations in which alcohol and other drugs may be used.
