Tests of Life: My Wife's Breast Cancer, by Dr. Brad Schwall
For my family's prayer at dinner the other night, my seven-year-old daughter prayed, "Thank you for helping Mom with her cancer."
It's been just over a year since my wife finished her final treatment for breast cancer. Helping our children with their worries, anger, and fear through my wife's diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy treatments, radiation, and recovery has made me aware more than ever that my job is to prepare them for the tests of life.
There are everyday tests, such as decisions, disagreements, frustrating moments, and even academic tests. How I handle these daily tests with my children will help them learn how to face life's bigger tests. As my wife faced breast cancer, the open communication we had been developing with our kids, the conversations about feelings, and the closeness we had nurtured helped us all face the test of my wife's cancer.
Every moment with our children is an opportunity to grow closer and guide them. Every moment makes an impression on our children. Listen to your children. Take time to help them express emotions about their experiences. Brainstorm solutions to problems with them. Affirm your children's strengths. Focus on happiness and hope that is not based on circumstance. No matter what tests you may face, you'll be prepared.
