Six Strategies for Effective Discipline:  Strategy 3 - Lead by Example, by Dr. Brad SchwallDr. Brad Schwall

Youth imitate what they see.  Showing children and teens exactly what behavior you expect helps them understand your expectations and how to put them into action.  The best way to teach character traits, good habits, and social and emotional skills is to model the thoughts, words, and actions required to make good choices.

Lead by Example

  1. Show what you expect
  2. Model the behavior
  3. Emphasize the positive consequences of the behavior

Modeling Behavior at Different Ages and Stages

Pre-schoolers

  • Show how to greet others politely
  • When the child is frustrated, model calm talk and problem-solving
  • Practice sharing and taking turns with the child
  • Model how to handle feelings

Elementary-aged children

  • Use situations involving conflicts or disagreements as opportunities to model problem-solving
  • Show the child specifically where to keep homework and items such as equipment and shoes
  • Demonstrate how you keep up with responsibilities through calendars and lists

Pre-teens and teens

  • Model respectful talk about others and people in authority
  • Guide in problem-solving about social situations and when making decisions
  • Model evaluating the consequences of actions
  • Speak to pre-teens and teens with respect
