We live in a relational and emotional world.  Skills for relating and handling emotions are skills we must use every day no matter what our occupation.  Proficiency or deficits in social and emotional skills have a big impact on the quality of our lives.

As parents, teachers, and counselors, we must help children develop social and emotional intelligence.  We must teach the other "Three Rs" - responsibility, respect, and resilience.

Responsibility

Teaching children to be responsible means teaching them how to:
  • be responsible for their actions
  • handle their anger constructively  
  • fulfill obligations
  • evaluate the consequences of their choices
  • make good choices
  • show self-discipline
  • problem-solve

Respect

Teaching children to be respectful means teaching them how to:
  • treat others with kindness
  • accept and respect differences
  • care for others
  • build others up with encouraging words rather than bring them down with mean words
  • understand the feelings of others
  • cooperate with others
  • grow healthy relationships

Resilience

Teaching children to be resilient means teaching them how to:
  • be confident
  • handle difficult situations
  • deal with rude treatment from others
  • deal with sadness and worries
  • avoid letting others determine how they view themselves or influence them to make bad choices
  • understand and communicate feelings
Who wouldn't want their children to possess these traits and skills?  Adults who possess these skills fare better in relationships, life, and work.

Commit to developing the social and emotional intelligence of the children in your lives by:
  • talking about these skills,
  • modeling these skills,
  • giving opportunities for them to practice these skills, and
  • affirming them when they use these skills.
I care more about my own children growing to be emotionally strong, developing healthy relationships, and living meaningful lives than what they will do for their schooling and work some day. Through Cool Kids, I am working to help you (and myself) guide the children in our lives to become responsible, respectful, and resilient.
