Who Cares?  by Dr. Brad SchwallDr. Brad Schwall

Think of the most content, positive person you know.

I would have to believe that the person you are thinking about consistently thinks about the needs of others and shows care toward others.  I would be very surprised if he or she did not.

Emotions are contagious.  When you are kind, affirming, and positive, you help people feel good.  Being kind and attentive to others makes for healthy relationships at work, school, and home.

Teach Your Children Well

Follow these steps to teach children any behavior.
  • Talk about it.
  • Model it.
  • Practice it.
  • Affirm it.

Teach Your Children to Care for Others

Follow these steps to teach your children to show care toward others.

Talk about it.  Point out the people you know who are not completely self-absorbed and who put others first.  Talk about how you can show care in your family and to others outside your family.

Model it.  Show your kids how to be caring by showing care in front of your kids.
  • Think of the needs of others.
  • Do caring actions for others daily.
  • Serve others.
  • Be polite.
  • Show empathy.
  • Listen to others.
  • Thank people.
  • Give compliments.
Practice it.  Give your kids opportunities to show care.  Give suggestions of kind acts they can do for siblings or grandparents.  Do a family service project.

Affirm it.  Compliment your children when they show care.  Emphasize that they can feel proud of themselves that they helped someone or were kind to someone.  Emphasize the benefits to everyone of being caring.

What are you going to do today, this week, this month to show care for others and guide your kids to care?  Don't just be thankful this week.  Do something to make someone else thankful.
